Workbench Update

While I have been a little lax with photo updates I have been busy painting.

The following are ready for varnishing:

• 6 Minas Tirith Knights
• 24 Minas Tirith Warriors (inc 8 archers)
• 1 Minas Tirith Bannerbearer
• 24 Mordor Orcs (inc 8 archers)
• 8 Fighting Uruk-hai
• 8 Uruk-hai w. Pike

In addition we have the following in various states of repair:

• 60 (odd) 28mm Celts and 3 Chariots assembled and undercoated.
• 3 Goblin Warbosses cleaned and based on slate to give them a bit of majesty. One is mounted on a Giant Squid.
  
• 3 Sets of Fences cleaned and awaiting undercoating.
• Warhammer Inn (Chapel) cleaned and awaiting undercoating.
• Warhammer Tower (modified) cleaned and awaiting undercoating.
• Lots of WOTR bases have been covered in glue and grit then undercoated.
• Other stuff that has been basecoated or otherwise started over the years and is awaiting a little TLC to complete.
  

Lastly, I have some new rule sets in the stable:

• Napoleon (Foundary)
• 1644 (Rick Priestly)

Sand Goblins - 3 Units Complete

Three units of Sand Goblins completed, 2 of Spearmen and 1 of Archers. Total of 60 figures.

They were painted and varnished with Army Painter Soft Shade. They are based but require a spray with matt vanish to dull them down.

Minor Update

Just a minor update, the painting table has been busy and getting closer to spitting out a few more completed units.

Painted and Varnished:
- Sand Goblins - 20 Spear and Shield, full command.
- Sand Goblins - 20 Bow, full command.

Painted:
- Minas Tirith Warriors - 2 Companies, hand weapons, shield.
- Minas Tirith Warriors - 1 Company, bow & hand weapons.
- Minas Tirith Standard Bearer.
- Minas Tirith Knights - 3 Companies, lance, shield.

Rob and I also got in our first run at the WOTR rules using unpainted figures to start learning the rules. 250pt each. Overall , big thumbs up - Simple to learn, fast moving and lots of dead things.

I have completed the first unit of Sand Goblins.

That is 80pts, 20 Sand Goblins including Command.




I have another 40 on the painting table, about 60% complete.

Painting Challenge - Celtic Ogre Army

Celtic Ogre Army

My intention is to create an Ogre Army for Warhammer Fantasy Battles based upon a Celtic Theme.

So far my thinking is:

Overall Feel:

Celtic painting style, long swords and 2 handed swords, woad and some chainmail. Clothes are stripes and tartans. Asterix & Obelix style hair and beards. Belly plates removed and converted to large bellies, except for armoured figures which will be scraped back and have Celtic designs engraved. Iron shod boots converted to soft boots. Trousers converted to full length with string tied bottoms. Armour will be chainmail and Celtic shields as greaves, etc. Boar or Wolves as Standards

Bases will be Celtic flagstones with a small covering of leaves. Forrest bases will include vines and animals.

LORDS:
Tyrant Warlord:	Figure included in a unit based on 2 shield bearers. Magnet feet to allow removal and use as a single figure.
Slaughter Master Draoiocht:	Ogre Bull with a cloak of leaves and Staff, based upon a rock alter. (pronounced [ˈ'driː.oxt]: meaning “Magic”)

HEROES:
Bruiser Chieftain:	· Well Armoured Ogre on a base that raises him up slightly.
Hunter Hunter?:	· Hunter figures with sabre tooths or mastiffs.
Butcher Draoidh:	· Ogre Bull with a cloak of leaves and Staff. · (pronounced [drɯːj]: meaning "Magician."

CORE:
Bulls Bulls?:	· Ogre Bulls with 1 handed long swords. · No armour. · Huge Celtic Shields as Ironfists.
IronGuts Ironguts?:	· Ogre Bulls with 1 handed long swords. · Celtic Shields to form armour. · Some chainmail
Gnoblar Fighters Spirit of the Forrest?:	· Forrest, vines and creatures. · Maybe use treekin, and 10mm Beastmen plus 10mm Half Ogres from Eureka
Gnoblar Trappers Creaping Land?:	· Vines with caught figures.

SPECIAL:
Leadbelchers Slingers?:	· Slingshots firing cannon balls.
Yhetees Fanatics:	· Naked Ogre fanatics with woad.
Gnoblar Scraplauncher Vengance Launcher?:	· Huge slingshot.

Maneaters ???:	· Special Orges in some uniform from history.
Slave Giant Giant:	· Giant with scale armour made using celtic shields. · Huge tree with a celtic cross gravestone as the head to form an axe.

Painting Challenge

I've decided I am going to paint the following as my contribution to the Painting Challenge

• Twelve (12) Witch Elves inc full command
• Ten (10) Shades - I shall use my Mengil Manhide models for this
• One (1) Noble / Dreadlord on a Cold One
• One (1) Death Hag with Cauldron of Blood
• Lokhir Fellheart

which is about 830 points...

I think I will get Juliette to paint an assassin to place in one of the units - you will never know he is there until it's too late

Painting Comp - Empire War Altar

This is the first unit for the painting challenge; an Empire War Altar. I am sure that a new plastic one will be released this year, but I need one now. BTW ~325 points he he he

Sand Goblins - Test Figures

I have completed 2 test figures and have done 3/4 of the block painting on the rest of the unit (20 figures inc Command)


This is the basic block painted figure.


The figure on the left has a wash of Devlan Mud on the cloths, followed by a highlight of Iyanden Darksun.

The figure on the right got a wash with Army Painter Soft Tone. It is shiny but well protected and still needs a spray of matt varnish.

I am impressed by the protection the Army painter system provides the figures. While the Standard approach gives more depth and a ragged look, I prefer the colour of the Army Painted figure. I still think I am wiping off too much of the wash when I apply it. No dout I will improve with use.

So the Army Painter method it is for Sand Goblins.

This week in the "barn" we will be painting and modeling.

Goblin Preparation - Part 2

I managed to get home early tonight and get the Goblins undercoated.

WHITE!!! All 62 of them.

Not Black, as they will not be Night Goblins but Sand Goblins.

Tomorrow we start with the test figures.

Terrain Stocks

I've continued the push to get some terrain painted - flat empty boards are going to be a thing of history...

to this end - I've painted a whole 3 inch fence!!!!!

i've also started the cold one for my dreadlord.

Goblins Prepared for Painting

Over the weekend I have managed to get the 60 Goblins from the "Battle for Skull Pass" set clipped off the sprue and cleaned off all the molding lines.

This is the the start of a Orc and Goblin Army, which will be predominately goblin based. Lots of low value troops screaming across the battlefield, in both attack or retreat.

Painting Challenge

Welcome to the 750pt Painting Chellenge.

The rate at which painted figures come out of the shed has fallen radically, and this little challenge is an attempt to change that. The aim is to paint 750pts of your favourite army by the 30th June 2009.

Rules are simple:

1. Paint 750pts by 30/6/09.
2. Warhammer, 40K, WOTR and LOTR are all acceptable.
3. Must be a legal army based on 2000pt list.
4. You may add to an existing force, however it must still meet the criteria of point 3.
5. Figures may already be assembled and basecoated, but no more.
6. Starts immediately.
7. Paul H. gets special dispensation, but must paint at least 1 Character and a unit of 10 Core troops.
8. Your better half must paint at least 1 figure, not necessarily for your force. (You never know, they may like it, and no I have not asked Ruth.)
   

(For War of the Ring, 750 points may need to be reassessed once we study the lists but it feels about right.)

The Electric-Shed will be used to capture progress. It will be configured so that only Authors may create posts or add comments. I hope that we will see lots of photos.
